General electrician certification requires 8,000 hours of on-the-job experience

Register to become an electrical trainee

The electrician trainee certification process can take between four and five years. The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), has a handbook detailing the requirements to become a certified electrician.
Applicants must be at the least 17 years old and have a high-school diploma or GED. They must also have a valid driver’s license. After they have completed the required coursework, they must pass an oral and written drug and physical exam.

Renew your electrician license
